Kinder Scout Trespass Commemoration – Sponsored Fundraiser

On 27 April, the North West Morning Star Readers and Supporters Group is organising a  fundraising commemorative walk to the Kinder Pass, scene of the famous and path-breaking mass trespass in 1932.

The trespass was an act of willful defiance by the ramblers and was a watershed moment in the struggle for the rights to roam. It was undertaken at Kinder Scout, in the Peak District of Derbyshire, England, on 24 April 1932. It was also fundamentally a class issue, the landed gentry who owned and still do own much of Britain’s countryside were denying access to working class ramblers and others seeking to escape the industrial cities for a day of recreation.

Britain’s communists and particularly the YCL and YCLer Benny Rothman were pivotal in organising the trespass – even in the face of police aggression and armed threats from the landlords game keepers and their other hired men. Some received jail sentences of up to six months.
